Razer Naga Review by Peter Brennon

Razer Naga Designed with MMO (Massively Multiplayer Online) players (World of Warcraft,…) foremost in mind, the Razer Naga will please a wide variety of gamers, online or off.

Named after a Buddhist serpentine deity, there is something divine about this gaming mouse. Not for nothing is the Naga a symbol of wisdom and secret knowledge. Users will seem to acquire those when they take this model in hand.

Before you even get a close-up look at this animal, you find yourself awestruck. The pouch included in the package lets you easily take it to LAN parties or with you on vacation. There’s also a very cool mouse pad that rolls up for easy transport.

Pull out the mouse and you’ll be faced with a sleek unit that is ready to behave like a Hydra-headed snake, slaying a dozen men at once :) . That Hydra-like ability is most obvious when you look at the left side of the mouse where you find the Naga’s dozen customizable buttons.

Forget reaching for function keys on the keyboard once you install this baby. You can’t miss them, either, thanks to the blue light that emanates from them when you plug it in to a free USB port. In addition, there are two fully programmable smaller buttons near the left mouse button defaulting to forward/back for Web browsing.

By default, the 12 button keypad on the left side corresponds to the 10 numeric keys (including the + and – keys) on a standard keyboard, which in turn correspond to the standard array of MMO game quick-slots.

The software suite provides yet more control. It lets you program the keypad and the other buttons with virtually any keyboard command or even complete macros, resulting in 17 flexible, powerful buttons that can be adapted to virtually any game or application.

Capable of up to 5,600 dpi and 1 ms response time (or, as Razer puts it “1,000 Hz Ultrapolling”), you have a gaming mouse that will never lag behind your ability. Move the mouse as gently as you like and find yourself at the other end of the battlefield in a flash.

That zippy behavior is assisted by the integrated Teflon feet that Razer labels “Zero-acoustic” and “Ultraslick.” Ok, those do sound like marketing buzzwords but they apply in this case. The movement is smooth and nearly soundless allowing for very fast motion without resistance or distraction.

That high level of sensitivity is also handy when you want to pick a pixel from a photo or trace a line carefully in an image. But, sometimes, it can cause other tasks to be a bit twitchy. If that setting is a little unnerving, you can always adjust the dpi down to your personal taste or needs.

The Razer Naga may have been designed with MMO gamers uppermost in mind, but first person shooter fans will get a real edge in play, too. In fact, no matter what game you enjoy, this model is a great gaming mouse.

Pros
  • Excellent ergonomics, good grip, great feel
  • Zero-acoustic Ultraslick Teflon feet
  • Cool blue glowing lights
  • Up to 5600 dpi, 1ms response time, very accurate
  • 17 MMO-optimized programmable buttons including 12 button keypad
  • In-game configuration add-ons (World of Warcraft, Warhammer Online)
  • Full button remapping functionality
  • Set up of different profiles

  • Long braided cable (about 7 foot)
Cons
  • Smaller than your average mouse
  • Some learning curve required
  • No weight management
  • Not for left-handers
  • Location of the 2 “thumb” buttons. You may end up hitting left-click button
  • Grid buttons 10-12 may be hard to reach

Jennifer N.,
As soon as I saw this mouse, I knew there was something special here. Suddenly we’ve jumped light years ahead of our standard 5-button mice to a 17 (!!!) button mouse. I knew after doing a bit of research that I had to try this mouse and I am so glad I did. Some reviews are calling this mouse a gimmick. You can go ahead thinking that while I continue to have more control over my games than I ever have before…Read full review

Jeff A.,
I don’t normally get on here and write reviews…as I’m normally too busy between a full time job, a full raid schedule and other stuff going on, but after reading some of these reviews I felt the need to post this. This mouse is absolutely wonderful. It feels very comfortable and all buttons are reachable. There is a little bit of a learning curve with initial use. My advice is to start small; bind three of the number buttons first and then once you have those down, add three more. You will be up to all twelve side buttons in no time…Read full review

Alvaroc,
I’ve been playing with this mouse for a month, and I have to say that I’m pretty satisfied with the product. I play quite a lot of MMOs and I’ve tried it in all of them, and now my keyboard besides movement is kinda useless (MMO PoV) because I just play with the mouse. As far as quality goes, it feels pretty comfortable for my gorilla sized hands (Tall guy here), and it responds smoothly. If you plan to play it with other MMOs or games, I’ve tried it with Aion, LotRO, and Silkroad Online and it functions perfectly. From RTS PoV, the thumb buttons aren’t as useful for a quick game, but you can bind some stuff to the mouse…Read full review

Razer Deathadder 3500 Review and Specs

Razer Deathadder 3500 Review by Peter Brennon

Razer Deathadder 3500

The Razer DeathAdder 3500 is the upgraded version of the Razer DeathAdder 1800. Just as the older 1800 dpi model it really is a great mouse, and at a very realistic price. If accuracy were the only criteria, the DeathAdder might win a contest against even the best competitors. Even though there are many other factors to consider, this model remains in outstanding company.

Outstanding ergonomics is one major reason. Fit and feel are always personal factors but the rubberized coating on the top of the DeathAdder makes it comfortable and easy to control.

You get plenty of control in other respects, too. The Razer DeathAdder supports up to 3,500 dpi, a number that generally exceeds by a wide margin the sensitivity anyone will need. The most vigorous FPS game will present no overwhelming challenges to this gaming tool.

That high sensitivity is also valuable for non-gaming activities too. “Non-gaming?” Yeah, we know. But even gamers have to do other things sometime. It’s ideal for detailed work in Photoshop, for example. Pick out a pixel or two and do whatever you want with them.

Better still, you can control sensitivity on the fly. Knock the level down a peg with a quick flick of the switch. That way your mouse won’t drive you crazy while editing photos, browsing the web, and so forth. It’s no effort to cut it to 1,800 or 900 or even 450 dpi.

The DeathAdder can move up to 120 inches per second (or, alternately described, it takes only 8 ms to move an inch) and with up to 15 g of acceleration. Besides the internal electronics, one thing that helps it do that are the Ultraslick Teflon feet. Low friction means the ability to move fast over multiple surface types.

Save your settings in a profile and you can toggle between them to best suit your immediate needs. Set on high for an FPS, lower for other activities. That profile saving feature is handy for lots of other controllable aspects, too, not least the ability to record macros.

Save up to five different profiles, four different dpi settings (450 dpi – 900 dpi – 1800 dpi – 3500 dpi) , three polling rates (from the default 125 Hz up to 500 Hz or 1000 Hz), and tons of other selections. Those profilable settings include programming the five large, non-slip “HyperResponse” buttons, as well. With a total of 5 different profiles this gives you a total of 25 distinct programmable buttons.

Terms like “HyperResponse” may be marketing buzzwords, but it applies here. The Razer DeathAdder offers a 1,000 Hz (1 MHz) polling rate. Put another way, every millisecond, the mouse is sensing where it is. If you can operate your fast-twitch muscle fibers faster than that, more power to you Superman.

Pros
  • Outstanding ergonomics
  • Ultraslick Teflon feet allows fast movements over multiple surface types
  • Better wiring (braided vs smooth rubber in the previous model)
  • Extremely responsive and accurate
  • 5 programmable buttons
  • Easy to use and highly configurable software
  • Left handed DeathAdder model available
Cons
  • Weight can’t be adjusted
  • Sides made with glossy slippery material which may lower your grip
  • On-The-Fly sensitivity switch on bottom of mouse. May be unhandy to switch dpi settings in the midst of a battle!
  • Besides the higher DPI not enough innovation to justify an upgrade if you own the older model and you’re happy with dpi’s up to 1800

Jason M.,
I like this mouse. It’s stylish, comfortable and customizable. I play a lot of fps and spend a lot of time on the computer in general. I have pretty big hands. I’ve found this mouse to be true to its claims on comfort and ergonomics. I can use it for long hours with no fatigue. The exception to this is my right ring and pinky finger pressed against the right side of the mouse can get sore after many hours of intense gaming. This may just be an issue with my personal grip style, I don’t know. The software is easy to use and there is every setting you could ever want to adjust on a mouse available….Read full review

J. Mcgrath,
I’ve loved this beautiful thing since the moment i got it. It’s REALLY cool. The left/right click on the mouse is really easy and sensitive, but not too sensitive. It’s just perfect for my COD4 MW2 playing. I love the feel that my hand has when it rests on the mouse. The cord is a lot better than my old [G5] mouse. The mouse lazer is awesome, and it moves with the SLIGHTEST movement of your hand…Read full review

Paul G.,
I played with a Logitech G9 and MX518 as well as the Razer Salmosa, which all felt like solid and accurate mice, but they lacked the feel the DeathAdder has. The arc of the mouse is by far the most comfortable I’ve ever used, in that it actually follows the curve of one’s hand how it instinctively would grab a mouse. I can’t say I know what the mouse grip is made out of, but it is completely slip resistant and oil resistant/absorbent. The sides of the mouse are a hard plastic and between the teflon feet and light weight of the mouse there is almost no resistance to movement…Read full review
