Logitech G500

It’s odd to think that a mouse – rather than, say, a game controller – could be your primary tool for whizzing around your favorite games. The Logitech G500 shows why we shouldn’t be puzzled at all.

Evolving from the legendary G5, the G500 may not be 100 times better but it’s certainly an improvement. The ten buttons on the G500 move Logitech mouse design from evolution into revolutionary territory.

Ergonomics is always a personal affair, but any right-hander is likely to find the G500 a great gaming tool. A solid click on well-placed buttons makes it so. Their unusual shape only adds to that feeling.

There are two main buttons and the clickable scrollwheel. They’re accompanied by two dpi buttons on the top left and three more along the left side. Just below the scrollwheel is yet another, used to switch wheel between clicky and hyperscrolling. Tap it, and suddenly that standard ratchet feeling disappears to be replaced by a freewheeling spin.

Despite all those controls, Logitech still found space for three red LEDs to provide great visual feedback. One indicates the current dpi setting from three options, which are configurable by the included Logitech Setpoint software.

It lets you select three separate dpi levels anywhere from 200 dpi to a ginormous 5,700 dpi. Going further, you can set them differently for both the x-axis and the y-axis.

Taking the theme of detailed control to its limit, you can even create up to five different profiles and load one into onboard memory inside the mouse. They’re stored permanently on the hard drive and can load automatically when you start a specific game.

You get equal control over the individual buttons to initiate various Windows functions and self-designed macros. The easy-to-use macro editor gives you practically unlimited control over what you’d like each button to do. You could spend a long time tailoring your G500 gaming mouse to your personal preferences, but you won’t find it hard to do.

Then set the polling rate anywhere from 125 Hz to 1,000 Hz (1 MHz), along with the desired cursor acceleration and mouse speed. FPS fans will find this mouse very responsive no matter how fast-paced the game.

One really handy feature is the slot for a weight cartridge. Users can tailor the mass of the mouse to their own personal preference. A removable cartridge lets you insert up to six different weights in various increments. There are a total of twelve masses included – six 1.7g chunks and six 4.5g ones. Mix and match anyway you like to reach a total of up to 27g. That’s only about 1 ounce, but you can definitely feel the difference.

The gritty texture along the sides contributes a great final touch to the functional design. It provides a good gripping surface for sure-handed play during active gaming.

Is the Logitech G500 gaming mouse for every gamer? It would be hard to prove that any piece of consumer electronics is right for every person. But with this much control, it’s equally hard to see how even the most finicky could be disappointed here.

Bucky,
This is easily the best Logitech mouse yet. I own both the G5 and G9, and settled on the G5 as my primary mouse some time ago after hating the grip of the G9. This was a problem, since I felt the G9 performed better but it just wasn’t comfortable. On the ergonomic side the G500 has had the ridge on the upper-right whittled down, making the mouse far more comfortable. Performance-wise, it’s technically better than the G9 and noticeably superior to the G5. The Setpoint software that is used with the G500 is also different from that of the G5, allowing for more control over the mouse. I’d recommend this mouse to any G5 owner without hesitation… Read full review

Beema,
This is my first real “gaming” mouse and I absolutely love it. After trying the Razer Lachesis and G9, this one felt the best for my hand. I have pretty small hands and use a “palm” grip style and it fits fine so far with no cramping or major discomfort issues. It feels nice and sturdy in your hand. The weight tuning ability is an added luxury, although I really don’t notice much difference. The ergonomics are good for the most part. I’m used to a regular 3-button MS Intellimouse (which is still the most comfortable, imo), and this is the only gaming mouse I’ve tried that’s come close to its comfort for me. The software is pretty nice, very straightforward and works fine for me on Windows 7 64-bit…Read full review

Fujislider,
For my medium-small-sized hands this mouse fits like a glove – the shape and base-weight makes it really comfortable. I tend to mouse with my wrist stationary, using only fingers to move around. This requires a slightly shorter grip around the mouse. Even so, left and right buttons are clickable almost as far back as half the mouse with little perceivable click-pressure change. Having basically 10 completely programmable buttons is a godsend for click-casting in World of Warcraft. Paired with the SetPoint software, it’s a no-brainer…Read full review

The Logitech G9X. Improving on perfection.

Last week we reviewed the Logitech G9 Gaming Mouse. And I have to say, it’s one of my favorites. Read the review here, if you missed it. That being said, we must share with you an improvement on this already amazing piece of equipment. The Logitech G9x has every benefit of that G9 plus a few more very important features.

Improvements in the laser engine that powers the G9x makes this mouse nearly 30% faster without sacrificing any of its trademark features. You can still change the grip, color, and weight of the mouse. However, now you can even create customized profiles to take on the go, thanks to the G9x’s on-board memory. Stay at the top of your game no matter where you are, whether it be an internet cafe or a LAN party.

Take a look at all the benefits the Logitech G9x has to offer:

  • 2 interchangeable grips lets you customize this mouse to your perfect fit and feel.
  • A 5000 dpi laser engine makes this one of the fastest mice on the market, only shadowed by the Razer Mamba.
  • Adjust the dpi on the fly for different gaming situations like sniping or intense fire fights.
  • On-board memory lets you program up to 5 different profiles.
  • Customize specific profiles with different sensitivity, keyboard macros, and even the LED display color.
  • The Logitech G9x comes with 28 grams of weights to customize this mouse to your weight preference.
  • A custom color LED display lets you choose the color of your mouse to match the rest of your gaming system.
  • Micro-Precision Scroll wheel, perfect for easy weapon selection in the middle of the action.

The Logitech G9x is really just an improvement on an already great mouse. The increase in dpi you get with this mouse, combined with all of its customizable features makes it one of the best gaming mouses on the market, and by far our favorite. No other mouse performs this well while allowing you to customize it to your fit and feel like the Logitech G9x gaming mouse.

Take a look at what current owners of the Logitech G9x have to say:
J. Storm,

After using a Microsoft Sidewinder for about a year I decided to try out the Logitech G9x. This mouse exceeded my expectations and blows the Sidewinder away. It comes with two different grips to choose from. The textured grip is great for gamers with small hands and the smooth grip is a bit wider so it fits people with wider hands. The setup for this mouse took less than 5 minutes, and the settings were a breeze to customize. While this mouse is a bit pricey, it provides all the quality and performance I was looking for. I highly recommend it.

John Jones,

This mouse has features out the wazoo. You can adjust the sensitivity from 200 up to 5000 and to top it off you can save your custom profiles to the mouse. This is great for me because I migrate between computers alot. As far as performance goes this mouse is laser fast and the on the fly dpi change works like a charm. All in all, I am very satisfied with the G9x and I can definitely see why Maximum PC awarded it their kick ass award. I give this mouse a 10 out of 10.
